Feeding Your DNA: The Science Behind Nutrigenomics

Dieting customized to your DNA.

Here at Orig3n, we’re focused on advancing the future of personal care. Our DNA tests are empowering people to use their genetic information to make more informed decisions in their daily lives. Join us as we explain how science and technology come together to create a revolution in self-care.

Let’s face it: one-size-fits-all dieting doesn’t work. Everyone is unique — different metabolisms, appetites, fat breakdown abilities, etc. — making it hard for dieting fads to fit every body’s needs.

Since the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, people have been trying to determine how they can use insight into their DNA to better their lives, and how to cater their diet to their unique genetics. This DNA-based approach to dieting is known as ‘nutrigenomics’.

What is nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is the tailoring of one’s diet to their DNA. The word seeks to explain the relationship between genes and nutrients on the molecular level — i.e. the interaction between genes and food bio-reactive compounds.

Take for example the fat processing gene, which is associated with an individual’s ability to process fats. For someone who is adapt — or has a disadvantageous result — in this gene, their body may struggle to process fats and as a result, they may be more likely to gain weight by following high-fat diets.

For example, while avocados and olive oil have gained popularity in recent years due to their labeling as ‘healthy fats’, these foods may not be the best fit for an individual with certain fat processing gene result due to their impact on weight.

How does it work?

To seek and explain the interaction between nutrients and genes, nutrigenomics analyzes:

  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology
  • Nutrition
  • Genomics
  • Proteomics
  • Metabolomics
  • Transcriptomics
  • Epigenomics

To create personalized results, scientists look at biomarkers on individual genes that impact how your body processes certain nutrients. (In the image below, the biomarkers are the horizontal lines.)

Once analyzed, these interactions are then used to aid in prescribing customized diets to match an individual’s genotype — pretty neat, right?

Is nutrigenomics real? Does it work?

Yes, and the research is promising!

In a recent study conducted by Consumer Reports, adults who had previously tried to lose weight, but failed, were split into two groups. The first group followed a general diet while the second group followed a tailored plan customized to their genes.

After 300 days, 73% of those on the tailored diet plan had lost weight, compared to only 32% of those on the general diet.

Additionally, KIND surveyed 740 registered dietitian and nutrition experts who predicted that personalized nutrition plans will be one of the top five food trends in 2018 — move over avocado toast!

The Future of Nutrigenomics

Due to the newness of the industry, the science behind nutrigenomics is ever-evolving, meaning that the future of nutrigenomics holds even more potential for diet personalization.

How so? By using what is known as ‘multi-omic’ data, a new biological analysis approach where data sets from multiple ‘omes’ (genome, proteome, transcriptome, epigenome, and microbiome) are combined to allow scientists to get an even closer look at your DNA.

Using this new approach, scientists are able to zoom into your genetics, past just your genes, and examine how proteins and other metabolites respond to food.

You can think of it as adding a magnifying glass to the genetic information that’s already available — which means more personalization for you!

Where to Start: Orig3n’s DNA Tests

Getting your genetic blueprint is easy and can help you understand what your body may need to look and feel its best.

Here at Orig3n, we offer multiple lifestyle DNA tests to help analyze your nutritional needs. To begin your journey check out our Nutrition DNA Test ($149), Metabolism Mini DNA Test ($49), Vitamins Mini DNA Test ($49), and our Hunger & Weight Mini DNA Test ($49).

How do DNA tests work?

It’s simple, easy, and fast — our process only takes 6-8 weeks!

By using a swab to collect a small sample of saliva from the inside of your cheek, our lab team is able to analyze your genes and tell you what foods may or may not work best for you.

Our process looks something like this:

  1. Find the DNA test that’s a perfect fit for you, purchase, and receive your DNA test in the mail.
  2. Swab your cheek in the comfort of your home and mail it back to our lab in the enclosed prepaid envelope.
  3. We receive your sample and begin processing it by extracting your DNA.
  4. Once your DNA is extracted we work to detect the unique code.
  5. Finally, we decode your DNA for different genes (depending on which product you purchased!) and send you your results via our secure LifeProfile app.

From there you can share your results with your nutritionist, registered dietitian, or healthcare provider who can assist you in developing a personal diet plan tailored to your DNA.

Who We Are:

Here at Orig3n, we believe that having access to your genetic information can help empower you to make better choices for your lifestyle. As a result, we offer a variety of lifestyle DNA tests, ranging from $29 to $149 so everyone can discover the right fit for themselves. And rest assured, we never share or sell your data. Your genetic information is yours, and yours alone.
